CLUSTER ANALYSIS OF INDUSTRIAL SECTORS USING THE KOHONEN MAP METHOD

Abstract. This article presents a cluster analysis of industrial sectors based on the Kohonen map methodology. Seven key indicators that determine the competitive advantages of Ukraine’s industrial sectors are identified. Clustering based on six performance indicators across 10 industrial sectors in Ukraine made it possible to identify characteristic industrial sectors with similar characteristics and to distinguish a cluster comprising the machine-building industry. A fourth cluster was also identified, comprising the most attractive sectors (food, chemical, and processing) based on their performance indicators relative to others. Clusters 1 and 2 were also identified based on performance indicators, grouping industrial sectors with slightly lower indicator values compared to the fourth cluster. The machine-building industry was placed in the third cluster alongside the sectors of electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply, the electric power industry, and metallurgy, which is also a priority cluster. The logic behind the clustering is evident: the grouping of more powerful industrial sectors during the wartime period (Clusters 1, 3, and 4) and the grouping of sectors from the prewar and wartime periods with similar indicators (Clusters 0 and 2). The results clearly demonstrate the dynamics of Ukraine’s industrial sectors and distinctly highlight their capacity, investment potential, and innovation appeal.

Keywords: clusters, industrial sectors, mechanical engineering, competitiveness, Kohonen maps, clustering.
